Some Artists and TV/Film that I love

Here’s a few from my hall of fame:

Gil Scott Heron

Influence on hip hop profound of course, but also just simply wrote some of the most poignant, pointing, beautiful, soulful etc songs of all time.

Curtis Mayfield
I could kind of ditto what I said above. It should be against the law not to own at least six of the great man’s records.

Love
Particularly for the stellar Forever Changes LP from 1967, but so many other incredible Arthur Lee songs beyond that work of genius.

Scott Walker
The Scott 4 album is about as wonderful a record as is possible to make.

The Stone Roses / The La’s
2 bands who each put out 1 record of sheer brilliance, and then pretty much, for all intents and purposes, packed it in (ok, ok, I actually like Second Coming a lot, but lets not make things difficult…). They really define a time for me, and in my old age now I still see them as beacons of cool. Sublime pop genius.

Some fave Movies & TV

Night of the Hunter (1955)
Charles Laughton directed masterpiece. Stunningly filmed, classic performance from Robert Mitchum as the evil Reverend Harry Powell, and a gripping score and songs by Walter Schumann.

The Wicker Man (1973)
Amazing Brit horror / thriller about a Pagan community/cult on a remote Scottish Isle. Some of the most incredible Brit folk-pop ever recorded for the soundtrack. The Britt Ekland scenes aren’t so bad either.

Ghost Dog (2000)
Jim Jarmusch, the way of the samurai, and a RZA sdtrk. What more do you need?

Boogie Nights (1997)
Not necessarily a film I’d take to the desert island, BUT, I thought a brilliant use of period music, and hugely influential for that reason. Made me fall in love with Walter Egan’s “Magnet and Steel”, so there.

The Office (UK)
OK, not much in the way of music of course, but this was so incredibly wonderful in its ability to make one laugh AND squirm with self-conscious discomfort. Thank you to Youtube for allowing me to view Extras before any North American TV broadcast..
