Composers & Originality

We've recently had to deal with the score's of several TV shows and or Films, and the discussion thus turned to what these shows should sound like. Lots of comparisons to other scores, people piping in about this or that film score, et al.

A music editor I know commented that all scores today are based on other temp scores which in turn are based on other scores and on and on until all cues begin to have the same ebb and flow, where at 45 seconds they all turn somewhere at the same time.

At the same time we've had to go out to several composers as a sort of cattle call on a series. Everyone pretty much delivered the same score. They sort of had to though. No one is really prepared for an "original" score today, except people working at the edges or top end of the craft of film making.

So the idea of "original" isn't really original at all. And, its not the fault of the composer. Nor the producer. I think the broadcaster is so hyper about chasing audience that they are looking for where the puck is...as in not where the puck is going.

I could go on about a recent conversation I was part of with several key network people who were discussing their hopes for the music of their upcoming series. But I won't,...except to say that the Simpsons episode about Poochy The Dog had nothing on this.

What a sense of freedom it must bring for a composer to truly follow his or her heart when pitching or creating an "original" score....and for them to truly deliver something "original", with no fear of failure. Now, that's a sign of true success.

Zen And The Art Of Music Supervision

It's official. I'm writing a book. Ok, perhaps more like a series of papers on life bound together under one title - Zen And The Art Of Music Supervision. I know....catchy.

I've started and I hope to share some of the things I've learned over the years of being a Music Supervisor, and how those things relate to what is really important; how to have a life that is, uh, full of life.

When I went to high school there was only one class that I learned anything in that is of value to me today, and that was my typing class. Mr Poe was a great typing teacher, but more important is that he was a great teacher of life. I hope to add to the things I learned from him with this book. Off I go...

it seems like just yesterday that we updated the arpix website....but yesterday is so far away, and today seemed like the day. so if you miss the free licorice, well you're at the wrong site, since there's never been any free licorice here.

things are just a little cleaned up, still using rapidweaver, even though it wants to be fed more money for an update. Hey, we understand small business. we are one!

Hope you like it, and you can navigate around easy enough. And if you can't, stick with the pencil and paper.
